2 марта министр обороны Сергей Шойгу доложил президенту РФ Владимиру Путину о взятии Пальмиры сирийской армией при содействии российской авиации.

В настоящее время сирийские военнослужащие полностью контролируют исторический город.

«Освобождение этого исторического центра цивилизации совпало с победами сирийских войск к северо-востоку от города Алеппо и стало сокрушительным ударом по террористической группировке „Исламское государство“ (запрещенная в РФ организация), которая рассыпается под ударами наших вооруженных сил и их союзников», — цитирует SANA заявление представителя командования ВС САР.

Отмечается, что, покидая город, террористы заминировали дороги и здания, и теперь сирийские военные занимаются поисками взрывных устройств.

В марте 2016 года сирийская армия уже отвоевывала Пальмиру от боевиков ИГ, однако в декабре того же года террористы снова заняли исторический город.
